This is a Rubik’s cube I crafted for my grandfather, who is visually impaired. I replaced the original colored stickers for new ones with symbols. The symbols were printed on small sticker cards, laminated with scotch tape, and then attached to the cube.
I knew from the start that I had to make the symbols easily recognizable and not to be confused with other symbols. For example; on my first iteration, I had a side with a + symbol and an x symbol (which was a rotated plus sign of the same size) on opposite sides. I found this to be confusing since those symbols were difficult to distinguish when looking at the cube from an angle. Therefore, I had to adjust the x symbol to reach the corners of the sticker to distinguish it from the + symbol. It was a slow process of putting the stickers on since I had to cut each one exactly the same size, make sure the symbol was centered, and place it in the middle of the cube’s parts exactly.
Here are the printed symbols that I experimented with and used:
All in all, I received great feedback on my work. It was a tedious yet fun exercise, and I enjoyed the creative process of designing the symbols.
